New Species: Lunar Water Dragons - need opinions

29 Aug 2019, 5:09 am (Edited 10 Sep 2019, 5:58 am)

Here's their current default appearance (open image in new tab for full size):
Longer back-frill version (not sure which I prefer, yet):
Basic coloured example (gotta add shading and stuff yet):

The lore I currently have:
• They are sea-dwelling creatures, they can be found in all oceans, but do prefer warmer climates.
• These little guys are tiny in size, no bigger than a fairy shrimp.
• They come in a whole range of colours and patterns.
• They are mostly actively at night, with peak activity being at dusk and just before dawn.
• Certain parts of them are semi-transparent in the daylight, but glow at night, some even have glowing patterns on their bodies.
• The closer it is to the full moon the brighter these parts will glow.
• When the full moon comes they use this glow as part of a pairing dance.
• Paired dragons will dance with their partners, while single dragons will dance to attract a partner.
• They are fantastic swimmers, and resemble otters in the way they swim.
• They can flatten down their back fins when swimming for a more streamlined swim.
• They are incredibly fast and always alert in the water, making it almost impossible for predators to catch them.
• They are gentle, social creatures and very intelligent.
• They're also curious creatures, and very playful.
• They usually live in social groups, although some can be loners.
• They feed mostly on kelp, but will eat most types of plant.
• They have mostly flat teeth for ripping and grinding the kelp, but 4 small canine teeth for breaking through tougher plants.
• They have between 10 - 20 quills along their back which connect the webbing.
• They have paws with webbing between the toes, but no paw pads or claws.
• They are called "dragons" but they have a texture more like jelly fish. No scales. They also give birth of live young - not eggs.
• While they can survive on land but it's almost unheard of for them to leave the sea.

Currently working on:
Shading and colouring my current model.
A few more pictures showing off the LWDs different stages of glowing during the moon cycle, and swimming.
A few minor alternate features for rarer LWDs.

I think this is a pretty cool concept! I would love to get one once you fully release them. I wish you luck with starting a species, it can take a while to get it going.

Looking for opinions on if people prefer the short or longer back-frill for the default design?

Oh my goodness these are super adorable! I'd love one once they're finished. I personally prefer longer back frills myself.

Thank you, everyone, for your encouraging words.

I'm working on a few extra images to show them off fully, and shading my default base image. I might then make a few adopts to check test the waters of peoples' interest.

I can make a ping list for anyone interested.

May I be on the pinglist?

I love them!! I prefer the longer back frill but it'd be cool to have variations, maybe have longer frill for males and shorter frill for females (or vice-versa). Can they only live in saltwater? I'd like to be put on the pinglist pls!

Thanks for your kind words and interest. I'll add you to the ping list :)
These ones are saltwater only, but I might make a freshwater version that slightly differs in appearance.

Thanks a lot for your interest. I've added you to the list :)
