Someone who appreciates art and other media depicting anthropomorphic animals.

From my experience, a furry is just a label. You can enjoy drawing anthro animals, roleplaying as one, and other 'furry' stuff without actually being a furry. Heck, you can even have a fursona (representation of you as an animal) without being a furry! All in all, it just depends on whether you want to call yourself one or not. But idk, I'm not a professional on this stuff. :P

"Can somebody explain what a 'furry' is"

...Not really. LOL

The reason I say this is because the term "furry" can mean so many different things depending on who you ask; there is no single definition for it. Some people think it simply means "a person who likes anthropomorphic characters", while others think it refers strictly to fursuiting/cosplay, while others think it's a fetish/genre of porn.

I personally try to avoid using the term unless I know what the person/people I'm talking to think(s) it means, and if what they think it means accurately represents the person/people we're talking about.

As a couple people have already mentioned, "furry" is merely a label people use to show they are part of the "furry fandom". You can still draw/like anthropomorphic art, characters, etc. and not call yourself a furry. "Furry" is] just an internet term more than anything. If you find yourself actively take part in the fandom itself, then maybe it would be more appropriate to use the label, but even then you don't really have to.

For example, most of my art is anthropomorphic animal characters I have created, which I used for my own stories. I even have a character I use to represent myself that is an anthropomorphic dog. This would be considered by most people to be a "fursona", but I don't use the term, nor do I call myself a furry, because I have been interested in this stuff and have had my "fursona" character long before I even heard of the fandom. I also just don't really like fandoms in general. I don't really care if people call me a furry though because to a lot of people, anyone who draws a lot of anthro characters is a furry no matter what.

I think that it generally boils down to whether or not you want to call yourself a furry, because in the end, furry doesn't seem to have one specific definition anyway, as already stated here by someone else.

Moli A furry is someone who has an interest in anthropomorphic animals, and a desire to call themselves a part of the community. Some people can like (for example) Lady Gaga's music, but not consider themselves a Lady Gaga fan. Similarly, you can enjoy aspects of anthro characters without being a furry, so don't feel pressured to label yourself as such if you don't want to.

Others said it really well, and I will add--like any label with a lot of connotations, if you use the label you kinda have to accept or at least learn to deal with people accusing you of things you might not be into. In other words, maybe don't call yourself a furry unless you're willing to explain that you aren't (or are!) "that kind" of furry--the kind often depicted in media erroneously as the majority. Similar to being a Brony. There's negative connotations, but it can still be an apt description of your interests and/or lifestyle if you choose to identify with it.

I am so glad you made this. I was wondering the same thing. After looking at the posts, I think I might call myself a furry. Just not around my family... (In my area almost everyone thinks "that" about furries. I didn't know what to trust. ) Thank you.
