ESSAY: WHY AND HOW TO WRITE IT?

What is an essay in the "school" context? It is a speech exercise, the meaning of which is to set out in a certain sequence of thoughts on a given topic. In our school tradition, however, the essay is perceived primarily as a means of control (an essay on the results of the study of a topic in literature, the annual essay, the graduation essay...). It is also traditional that schoolchildren do not like, cannot, and do not want to write essays. I will not talk about the reasons, I will only say that the essay is a very useful exercise that develops written speech, spelling, and punctuation literacy. When starting to teach an essay, it is useful to first explain what it is and why you should learn to write it. This can be done as early as 3rd grade. What should be explained?

1. The word essay has the root -chin- and the prefix so-. In S. I. Ozhegov's dictionary, we find the word chin, one of the meanings of which is order, ritual (given with the marks of book, obsolete). Composition is a COLLECTION and arrangement in a certain ORDER of one's thoughts on some topic.

2. An essay is a speech exercise, one of many. Children are already familiar with other speech exercises, such as free dictation and exposition, and their meaning is clear. Composition is also a very useful exercise because people communicate not only orally but also in writing, and your thoughts need to be able to formulate and arrange consistently.

HOW DO YOU TEACH AN ESSAY? WHAT TO START WITH?

It's best to start with what are called free topics when your child is asked to talk about himself. In this way, he will know exactly WHAT to write about and can concentrate on HOW to do it.

Let's look at an example. Let's say a child needs to write an essay on one of the topics:

My Summer Adventures.
How I traveled this summer.
The happiest day of my summer vacation.

ALGORITHM FOR THE ESSAY

The child goes through all stages together with an adult. The adult helps, participates in the discussion, but of course, does not write for the child.

1. Let's read the topics carefully, underlining the keywords in each one. My summer adventures. How I traveled this summer. The happiest day of my summer vacation.

2. To understand what to write about, let's translate each topic into a question: What adventures did I have this summer? Where did I take the trip and how did it go? Why was this day of summer vacation the happiest? Now you can choose a topic for the essay. Suppose the child chose the first one.

3. Formulate the main idea of the future essay, the one we are writing it for, the one we want to share with the reader. It is very important to do it at the very beginning so that you understand not only what to write about, but also for what's sake. For example, like this: I will remember this summer for a long time, because I went camping for the first time, learned a lot, watched the forest inhabitants, and learned something about forests, which I didn't know before. This is the main idea to be sure to write down on the draft. We have a conclusion ready, which is how we will finish the essay.

Now you need to make a working plan on the rough draft. To do this, you must first write down in a PROVISIONAL order all the things which the child wants to tell about, that is, record the thoughts as they appear. And then you need to think about the order in which you want to tell it all, and number your notes. You will have a work plan. This should be supplemented with an introduction and a conclusion. If you write the plan sequentially, it can go like this:

I. Introduction. I had many adventures this summer.

II. The main part. My adventures.
1. First time camping.
2. Learning to fish.
3. A jolly squirrel.

III. Conclusion. Why will I remember this summer for a long time?

5. Begin writing the essay on a draft, but NOT with the INTRODUCTION, but with the main part. We will write the introduction later when the whole text is ready. We write the main part, the plan helps us: we tell about the trip, about fishing and the squirrel, how we watched it, what we learned. We remember all the time our main idea: to tell about what we learned and what we saw and learned during the trip. Remember about the readers: it should be interesting for them to read this essay! When the main part is ready, we read it and then reread the main idea (aka conclusion) to see if the conclusion follows from the content of the essay. If necessary, we correct something. We have the main part and conclusion ready.

6. We write an introduction. For example, I had a lot of adventures in the summer because I went camping for the first time and there were a lot of interesting events, that's what I will tell you about them).

7. We rewrite the essay on the clean sheet, check it.

I must say that this is a universal algorithm: it is suitable for writing essays in elementary school and high school, and in general for creating a written text in any genre - from a personal letter to a scientific article. Tested many times!
