Frosty Writing Contest 2025: Silv's entry
Snowy Adventures
"Bowie! You're finally awake!" Fritz said excitedly as he bounced to and fro on his hooves, antlers jingling with every movement as the tiny crystals and feathers caught the pale morning light.
He leaned in closer to her, eyes sparkling.
"Do you wanna build a snow-deer? Doesn’t have to be a snow-deer… it could be a snow-unicorn? Or we could go sledding? Maybe we could try our hooves at ice sculptures!"
Fritz smiled cheerfully, already halfway down the path as if he just couldn’t contain himself one minute longer, as Bowie stepped out of her house.
"Come on! We’ve got so many fun things waiting to be seen and done!"
Bowie trotted after him, her hooves clopping along the path after his frantic excitement.
"Fritz... Have you been drinking too much Tigereye Peak cocoa again? You know all that sugar is bad for you!" Bowie chuckled.
“Brr, it certainly is chilly enough for snow, anyway! Honestly? I’d rather stay in Quetzal Palace today. It’s too cold to go up Tigereye Peak!"
Fritz gave a sheepish grin.
“Maybe I have been drinking some Tigereye Peak hot cocoa… just a little bit! But, come on Bowie, it’s sooo good! They make it with real chocolate.. And cream!”
“Good grief! No wonder you’re so full of beans!” Bowie laughed softly.
“Yup! Beans, beans, beans!” Fritz laughed with her.
He bounded around in a little circle, the tiny crystals in his antlers jingling like miniature wind-chimes.
“Sooooo, what d'you say? Ready to go on an adventure?” He paused, tilting his head.
Bowie blinked and shook her head in fond amusement.
"Slow down. Why don't we go for a walk? See if we can't get you to work off all that sugar?" She laughed, looping her hoof in his and dragging him along. "Come on!"
Fritz chuckled, still buzzing with energy as he let Bowie take the lead and drag him off by his hoof.
"Haha! Okay, okay, point taken!"
As they walked, Fritz watched villagers making the village pretty with Snow Festival decorations. Pie and roast nut stalls lined the streets. Pretty lights lit up the shops, showing off the gifts for sale. Fritz had gotten Bowie a gift already, of course, but he’d made it, not bought it.
"It’s the day the Snow Festival starts and I’m so excited, Bowie! Just you see, this day is gonna be legen-wait for it…dary!" Fritz exclaimed.
Bowie laughed at her friend's antics.
"You, my deer, are hilarious!"
They walked through Quetzal Palace gardens together, not a snowflake to be seen yet.
Fritz gave an exaggerated bow, sending the crystals and feathers on his antlers bobbing and making Bowie laugh even more.
"You honor me. My goal is to spread joy, especially to you, my friend!"
As they passed through the Quetzal Palace gardens, Fritz's eyes kept flicking skyward, searching for any telltale signs of falling snow. Every now and then, he paused to pluck a frost kissed leaf and tucked it behind Bowie's ear with a warm laugh.
"Gotta show your regal status, after all! Unicorns are royalty, right?"
"Oh, thank you sweetie!" Bowie grinned. “I suppose so! Though I don’t feel much of a royal! I'll still have a crown of frosty leaves by the morning's end!"
She glanced out across the gardens towards the spiralling towers of the palace in the distance.
"I'm excited to see Quetzal Palace in the snow!"
Fritz bounced on his hooves, still buzzing with energy.
"Oh, Bowie, you won't be disappointed! Everything gets covered in a blanket of diamonds. Every branch, every blade of grass... it's like the whole forest turns into a crystal wonderland!"
"Oh that sounds amazing!” She replied, eyes bright and wide with joy and eager energy.
“I hear the serpent goes to collect the snow from Tigereye Peak and brings it here! I'm not sure if that's a silly tale or truth. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised. But then I wonder how the other villages get their snow?!" Bowie asked as they sat on a bench and watched everyone dashing past, getting ready for the Snow Festival.
Fritz leaned in with a dramatic whisper.
"Well, let me tell you! Oceandome is under the sea in a special dome. I hear they import the snow from Tigereye Peak and have it dispensed from the top of the dome! I hear it melts pretty quickly though! Olde Foxbury is near enough to Tigereye Peak that they get snow drifts off the mountain all year long! And Dragonsmaw Manor? I hear it's all fake... It's shredded up old ghost costumes from Harvest Carnival!" Fritz giggled.
“Really? You’re not joking?” Bowie asked.
Fritz shook his head firmly, the trinkets on his antlers tinkling softly again.
“Well, what strange traditions the other villages have!” She said.
“I have your gift. Would you like to open it? It is Snow Fest afterall!” Fritz said after a few minutes of peaceful quiet.
“I’ve brought yours too, let's exchange and open them!” Bowie said cheerfully.
Bowie handed over a small box wrapped in snowflake paper and neatly topped with a silver bow. Fritz’ gift was wrapped in candy cane wrapping and red ribbon. Their eyes met in eager anticipation before ripping the paper off their presents.
“Oh, I love it!” Bowie said, lifting up a silver bangle with a bell on it.
Fritz was busy admiring his own gift. A handmade hot chocolate mug.
“I had help from Ender making it!” Fritz said, looking up and grinning. “I love my mug by the way, thank you, so much!”
“You made it?!” Bowie said, admiring the craftsmanship.
“Sure did!” Fritz chuckled.
“Thank you!” Bowie said, hugging him.
They laughed together.
Eventually they walked on, grabbing a quick bite to eat from a food cart as they walked. Fritz wanted to go into the maze and they, of course, ended up lost as they explored. But they didn’t have a care, they were having far too much fun.
“I fear we may end up here til nightfall!” Bowie chuckled as they rounded a corner.
“No we won’t! I know the way, come on!” Fritz said cheerfully.
Bowie and Fritz ran through the maze together, often having to turn back as they hit a dead end. Running round a corner, they came to the center of the maze. Fritz cheered.
“See? I told you!” He said.
“It only took us nearly all afternoon!” Bowie laughed.
As they walked out of the maze, the serpent flew overhead and the first few flakes of snow started to fall. Bowie squeaked in elation.
“Happy Snow Festival, Bowie!” Fritz said, fondly.
“Happy Snow Festival to you too, Fritz! And a joyful New Year!” Bowie replied.
