Upgrading weapons is something that can be achieved over time. Since the smithing hammers were released I've worked on crafting them without buying too many materials, I started crafting the first two hammers and them moved to the upper levels, in matter of months I got most of the equipment on my main warrior upgraded to 150%. It was way way quicker than getting all those weapons upgraded with the Traveler, since there's no way I can grow +5M FC via gameplay. This will be the same, weapon upgrading is not pay to play anymore, you can do it ^^
