Melianthus major - Commonly known as Honeybush. The entirety of the plant is poisonous, especially the roots where cardiac glycosides that cause contractions in the heart muscles to the point of heart failure. Poisoning from Honeybush is mostly found in animals, with vomiting, increased salivating, internal bleeding, a bluish tint to the nose and mouth, weak heart beats, hemorrhaging of the lungs and damage to the liver and kidneys. It is possible for bees to make honey from the nectar of the flowers, however the honey itself is black in color and is toxic as well. Most farm animals and domesticated animals will not touch it due to the unpleasant odor, but will eat it when other food sources are not available.
