About

Little Orion was born under the stars

He didn't like the cave much, and would rather be out flying in the woods to see what other kinds of animals live out there. The few different kinds of creatures he'd met already were all so different from him he just couldn't wait to meet them all.

But his mother kept him inside. She said it was too dangerous out there for such a little bat. Despite all his protests, he was left in the dark cave, only allowed to crawl out on the wall during scout duty. Until one faithful night.

He had waited his whole life for this, and he was so excited. He was lined up with the rest of the colony, ready for takeoff into the night to collect things to better the colony.

After only a few miles, he found out that long distance flying was harder than he thought, and he had to descend into a large oak tree below. He was greeted by the glare of an old great horned owl who must live in the large hollow in the tree behind him.

Orion squeaked happily at the chance to make a new friend, and turned toward the owl with a smile. "HI! How are you?" When the owl didn't answer, Orion didn't skip a beat and jumped right into his own ramblings. "This is my first flight out. I'm not very good at it yet. I got tired and needed to land for a while. I'm happy to meet you though!" The owl just stepped out of his hole and flew away,

Over the next few days, Orion landed in different areas of the forest, meeting as many others as he could. He even asked around about the grumpy old owl. He found out that his name is Henry and he does kindof the same thing that he does, but for the creatures of the forest instead of his own colony. He also found out that he'd been all alone for almost ten years since his wife passed away.

Orion decided he was going to befriend grumpy old Henry, and started stopping at his tree every day. Every day he asked how Henry was, and every day he just got silent glares. Every day he told Henry stories. Stories of what was going on that day, or things that happened years ago. Every day Henry ended up ether flying away or just telling Orion to go away, but Orion never gave up. He came back every day.

After a few weeks, Orion noticed Henry smiling and giggling at some of his stories, and that it was taking longer and longer before he got annoyed and flew away.

Finally, one rainy spring morning, Henry actually answered Orion when he asked him how he was doing that morning. He was annoyed at the rain, and that if he wants to get stock for his shop, he's gonna have to get wet. Orion agreed that the rain wasn't fun to fly in, but that the work had to be done. The little bat offered that they go out together and split the haul at the end. Henry surprisingly agreed and they took off on a quiet, wet journey to gather their items.

After many months, Henry was telling his own stories to Orion, and the little bat was immensely proud of how much the owl had come out of his tree. The crotchety old owl had even begun to complain less, and see the good in life.

Orion still never misses a day of talking to his friend.
