Wyeth is extremely intelligent, but likes the drama of having a problem too much to use their brain to fix it right away unless there is immediate fatal danger. They like to watch everything unfold until pushing themselves in at the last minute and saving the day; this is mostly for their own amusement and albeit, the adoring attention of unsuspecting spectators.
Wyeth met Briar and Charles while flying around; they made a passing comment that insulted Charles, who responded with a witty retort. Unused to being challenged, Wyeth flew back and the two began a war of words as Briar watched, thoroughly enjoying the show. Wyeth found the whole thing a game, while Charles was becoming increasingly angry.
Wyeth liked Briar's attention and the two became immediate friends- to Charles' annoyance. Charles didn't like how Wyeth talked down to Briar and seemed to treat him as more of a pet than a friend- and he especially didn't appreciate how Wyeth referred to Briar as a "she" despite being told repeatedly that Briar was indeed a boy; their reasoning was that "Dragons are genderless- it doesn't matter to me." and Briar, in his usual naive fashion, lapped this up and allowed Wyeth to, in Charles' opinion, continue to disrespect him at every turn.
Charles also didn't appreciate Wyeth taking advantage of Briar's eagerness and curiosity by landing him in dangerous situations and swooping in to get him out of danger at the last second purely for their own amusement. Briar either saw this as Wyeth "looking out" for him or "just a bit of fun", but Charles still refused to trust the dragon and only put up with them for Briar's happiness. He figured as long as he was there to keep an eye on things, he'd allow it.
Despite all this, Wyeth genuinely likes Briar, and even Charles to a degree. They just like messing with them and doesn't fully realise the repercussions of their behaviour and the effect it could have in the future.
