Counting magpies is an established, if maligned, tradition for determining one's fortune. One for sorrow... two for joy. Some magpies, like Twofer's parents, delight in their supernatural reputation, and Twofer is only glad that he, out of the rest of their first clutch, got 'for joy.' He left the old woods behind to seek his fortune among 'civilization,' though what he knows of village society is mostly old crow's tales and hearsay.
