Apophis, the Sun Devouring Wyrm never got a chance to be just that. Apophis, born into a family of two other brothers, and a father-king and a mother-queen who he killed by merely being born, was left alone as a child. Left to his own devices, and this he did, he read and he read the vast libraries of the Feathered Serpents, and, all the while, he grew to be detested by his people, by his brothers, by his father, for his scholarly ways and meek personality.
His eldest brother, Atem, however, saw a spark of something else in him, underneath that teeth gripping hate. And so, he took the youngest under his wing, and whispered sweet things and promises until Apophis grew heavy and round with them.
And, once Apophis had seen the parade of the gods thirteen times, he was given a warrior-staff, blood paint, and sugary words from a black bile rotted mouth.
Apophis slew the favoured middle brother, and his father, for his eldest brother to take the throne of the Feathered Serpents.
For many moons and midsummer parades Apophis was no more than a toy, a plaything, to be tugged and twisted and bent by nimble fingers and just as powerful words. And that was, until, the toy grew boring, and he was simply abandoned, crumbled and dull in the light of the crimson sun.
With his purpose gone, Apophis wandered the earth aimlessly, far longer than what the life span of a Feathered Serpent dictated, and came across the loving embrace of the Sanctuary.
Apophis loves his brother, still. And Atem still lives, old and grey and frail in body, but in body only.
However Atem is the sun, bright and glaring and glorious but weak to the gifts of power. The sun is always meant to run, flee across the blue sky from a wriggling serpent, even if the serpent hasn't yet fully realized it's cosmic role.
