Clay is completely mute and communicates mainly through sign language. He's never told the story behind his condition, but the scars across his throat say more than he ever could.
Originally from Oceandome, Clay left home when he came of age. He spent time in a number of small settlements but eventually decided to stay at the House of Rain, working as a gardener. Part of this is because Anachronic gave him something extraordinary, the same sort of deal the strange dragon offers all of their inhabitants: a voice to use when he needed.
That voice is Henrietta, Clay's constant companion-- a small, long-tailed bird. The two share a magical link which allows Clay to project his voice through her. He has a hard time using this ability unless there is a need for it and dislikes it as well, claiming it makes him feel strange to do so.
