It is not playing save, it is about that if there will be another seller (not experienced), he/she will underbid you, not me. Meaning, not just you wasted more than 5-10, but even I wasted it, and he/she wasted it... and then someone else will come, see like 6 items of it, underbid you and him/her and it goes on. Basically, first who underbid "a lot" or as you said "safe underbid" is just wasting money to everyone XD On some games, it is called: "Ruining the auction system" :P
Even in future, it is good to underbid for like 5 (Well, even for 1, but that is really silly way to underbid). Even that 15 what it was now is rather large gap. I am in auction and I would underbid you instantly, but... if there would be no one like me, and you have time to worry about it, just underbid for 5 and see ^^ People are lazy to scroll down, they will buy cheapest one (if it is not frigin potion with % cure chance from doctor XD)
Qzick tip: Maybe, just maybe sometimes look at prices at auction, and don't underbid for more than 50. You have better chance to get more money ;)
