Okay, the help articles say Alchemists need Herbalists. So here's how to be an Alchemist: Get an explorer to get money and seeds for you. Get an herbalist to grow the seeds. Then your alchemist can make potions with the plants.

Explorers and Warriors are the first links in the money chain. They bring back raw materials and bits of money.

I'm not sure whether Alchemists need explorers or warriors. I'm guessing you spent all your money on that recipe, so you'll have to change your profession to Explorer. (Warriors need equipment before they can bring in money.)

Your profession's knowledge/inventory stays when you switch careers. So you can switch back and your knowledge will still be there.
