Mud's story... One day, a kappa fell asleep by the river. The bakeneko thought it would be funny to tip dirt from the riverbank into their head plate as they slept, not knowing that the kappa would be unable to replace the water! Ever since, they have been (lovingly) referred to as 'Mud'.
