Come back Home - 4th Muster in Seoul
I wish to see this again. I love all of their powerful performance plus this song is meaningful. It's a cover song that they made some differences from Seo Taiji. And I found an interesting blog about this from Army Amino.
First is the analization about the original song of Seo Taiji, the lyrics are amazing.
What am I trying to find now?
What am I trying to find now?
I see the end of my life
Feeling heavy in my heart
My life is blocked
By the fear of tomorrow
After I see myself abandoned
Day after day
I am not there
And tomorrow is not there either
My rage toward this society
Is getting greater and greater
Finally, it turned into disgust
Truths disappear at the tip of the tongue
Ay’ body get it up
Throw your hands up!
ou must come back home
To warm up the coldness in your heart
You must come back home
In this harsh life
You must come back home
To warm up the coldness in your heart
You must come back home
I will keep trying
One more life is born
And parents take charge
No love for me
My painful tears have dried up
The world is like an empty bubble
Look around, waiting for you
Yes, that's enough now
I wish I could fly in the sky
Because we are still young
And our future is good enough
Here! Now wipe the cold tears out
And come back home
You must come back home
To warm up the coldness in your heart
You must come back home
In this harsh life
You must come back home
To warm up the coldness in your heart
You must come back home
I will keep trying
In the place to be
One, two, three
Come on!
In the place to be
Come on!
In the place to be
Yes-yes y'all
In the place to be
Yes-yes-yes-yes y'all yes y'all
My heart is about to burst
I thought it would drive me crazy
I realized now
That you loved me
You must come back home
To warm up the coldness in your heart
You must come back home
In this harsh life
You must come back home
To warm up the coldness in your heart
You must come back home
I will keep trying
(What am I trying to find now
Where am I going now?)
You must come back home
What am I trying to find now
What am I trying to find now
What am I trying to find now
What I am now
Thank you for the lyrics, Genius translation
[I love how deep the meaning of the song is. This home he is talking about can be interpreted in different ways. It may be literally his home, as a source or comfort, or even somewhere where he feels warm and safe. It could even be himself, his old self before feeling all this coldness, anger and sadness. I'll leave it up to you to interpret the meaning of it. I think it can be very personal.
I get a feeling of hope and despair when i read the lyrics. I feel a whole lot of emotions that i already mentioned and it is directed towards different people, the whole world. It feels like he is left out, lost and by himself, that it is all unfair. But i also like how he says that he will keep trying even if he is suffering. He is constantly trying to search for something and it ends up that it is himself.
I think that the lyrics are strong and full of emotions and raw feelings. When we hear the song after reading the lyrics, the instrumental does make a lot of sense. The brass sections that is confusing illustrates well his feelings, discomfort and even a bit of chaos in a way. The small voice that says "what am i trying to find now" is almost like him talking to himself in his head. Also, the repetition of the same note in the melody could illustrate the coldness he is referring to. In the chorus, there are two different voices: one that says "you must come back home" and the other that answers. The first one only appears during the chorus with this specific line, which shows that it is as if someone outside is calling him, convincing him that he should come back home. The first voice appears at other places too but the contrast is even stronget there. I may see too much into it and i may be wrong but this is my own interpretation.
In short, Come Back Home by Seo Taiji is very original and it steps outside of the box. The sound is unique, the colours are distinct and the beat/melody is quite simple and repetitive while being energtic, but the rythm, the overall flow and the vibe is very interesting and enjoyable. The lyrics are also well done and the meaning of it is amazing. I absolutely love it!
...
Now. Let's talk about the cover.
BTS (방탄소년단) - Come Back Home MV
There is so much to say that i don't know where to start.
What i was saying about anger towards the whole world is perfectly protrayed in the mv. It is basically full of raw emotions, especially revolt and hatred. There are only three characters but they all feel the same emotions, they are all suffering as one. I don't want to say too much because i may be wrong, but i think that this need to get away and to make everything stop is powerful and so well done in the mv. How the main character keeps running, how the girl is trapped in her whole world and how the other guy is having enough of society and the pain others make him feel gives so much more depth to the song. The mv is simple yet so evocative. And as i said about the lyrics, there is still hope somewhere and they find it at the end. It's the only time when we can feel a positive kind of emotion.
However, the lyrics aren't exactly the same.
Cause I’m coming back home
What am I trying to find right now?
Where am I going, without rest right now?
I’ve seen the end of my life
My heart became so cloudy
The thing that was blocking my life
Was my fear of tomorrow
Angry? Hungry? Yes I’m hangry
Each day repeats
There was no future
And there wasn’t even a tomorrow
Because we’re still young
Because we have a decent future
Now wipe away those cold tears
Come back home
Why waste time?
My blood and sweat are upright
Now engrave my name on that trophy
Come back home
You must come back home
Warmer than the hearts that left
You must come back home
In this rough life
You must come back home
Warmer than the hearts that left
You must come back home
I will complete myself
Come back
Come back to my home, come back home
Come back to my home, come back home
(In this rough life)
Come back to my home, come back home
Come back to my home, come back home
(I will complete myself)
Hunnit band, hunnit band, hunnit band
To the honor of the family, my mother
To fill the stomachs of my family
I’ll keep working hard
Friends, put your worries away
Our path is clear
Started from the bottom and we still going up
I want so much more
Because we’re still young
Because we have a decent future
Now wipe away those cold tears
Come back home
Why waste time?
My blood and sweat are upright
Now engrave my name on that trophy
Come back home
You must come back home
Warmer than the hearts that left
You must come back home
In this rough life
You must come back home
Warmer than the hearts that left
You must come back home
I will complete myself
Oh, you must come back (Yo)
You must come back (Yo)
You must come back home
(Come back home)
Oh, you must come back (Yo)
You must come back (Yo)
You must come back home
(Come back home)
‘Cause I’m coming back home
You must come back home
Warmer than the hearts that left
You must come back home
In this rough life
You must come back home
Warmer than the hearts that left
You must come back home
I will complete myself
Come back
Come back to my home, come back home
Come back to my home, come back home
(In this rough life)
Come back to my home, come back home
Come back to my home, come back home
(I will complete myself)
Thank you Colour Coded Lyrics!
We can see that they changed the lyrics a lot. It gives a completely different feeling to it and adds a personal touch. In fact, they changed almost all the lyrics. It's like it was adapted to a new era, a new generation.
While Seo Taiji's lyrics in the beginning are in the present, theirs are in the past. It changes the whole perspective and the meaning of the song. They also added a lot of lyrics and even melodies, but i'll talk about that aspect later. While it is still full emotions, they aren't the same. Seo Taiji's version is full of anger and desparation with a touch of hope, but BTS's one has more warmth to it. There is still a lot of the same emotions and i think that they are conveyed more intensely, and it's even aggressive at some point, but the lyrics add different feelings in the mist of all the rawness. The fact that they refer to the past and how they are struggling as well but that it's going better gives a different feeling. It has more hope and it is more encouraging. The lyrics were approached by both sides differently and it shows that just a single choice of word can completely change the whole meaning and the general feelings.
Also, it's interesting to see that instead of saying "what i am now" in the last line before the last repetition of "come back home", BTS say "i will complete myself". It makes it brighter and even more hopeful. Instead of showing how lost they are and how much they are trying to figure themselves out, like Seo Taiji did, it shows that they will definitely solve it and that they have more determination. It's like they know what they want instead of wandering around and questioning everything that is wrong, wondering how it can change. They are less confused. It's really an update of the song, as if they are talking about the same issues but with more exprience of the world and a new persepective, like they observed what happened in the past, that they are aware of it, but that they have learned from it and that they grew up. It's like all their emotions are even more intense but under a different light.
I also think that their voices are very strong and i love how they say "you must come back home", like that they have to. It's not an option: it's an order. They have so much determination, so many intense emotions and so much desire and anger pent up that it turns into something positive. They aren't just complaining and confused. They will go on, no matter what. That's what i mean when i said the feelings are different: yes, they are angry and tired, but they have a lot of energy and they will make it. They have determination, confidence and it gives them hope. At least, that's what i get. It also reminds me of their debut songs when they were against the world, when they fought for their dream.
The way they changed the lyrics to make it more personal and to make the song theirs is so clever. It's like instead of telling Seo Taiji's story, it's their own. It also shows that no matter how much time and how many decades passes, we all have the same worries and the same issues and BTS shows it to us with an adaptation to our current society and with their story.

Not only they changed the lyrics, but they also changed the melody and the rythm. They even removed the break present in Seo Taiji's version to replace it by a more conventional bridge. They added melodic lines that were not there in the first place, like the "come back to my home, come back home" that Taehyung sings. They also modified a lot of verses. It begins similarly to the original version, but it quickly changes. They added more rythm to the melodies, more emotions to the lyrics and it makes the song as a whole much more dynamic.
Talking about dynamic, the instrumental is insane. The production is amazing. The contrast is so intense between the simple band recording of Seo Taiji's band and the beats that were produced by BigHit. The contrast of each parts and the details gives more energy and even confidence to the song. And i love how they kept the same guitar and bass line at the start and at the end of the song, kind of like a reminder of the past and a reminder of the actual original song. The bass isn't as smooth; it is stronger, more present and more imposing.
The beat is so interesting and well done. There are so many effects and sounds that they played with. Instead of keeping the static beat Seo Taiji had, they made it move much more. It's also interesting to see how they didn't put the brass section but that they replaced it by a sound that is exactly like the melody of the first lines "what am i trying to find now". I could talk about so many more details but it will be way too long, so i'll leave it at that. The main point is that there are many changes in the intrumental, with a completely different style, and that it was done amazingly. The two versions are even opposite concerning the type of music.

I have no idea who made all these changes, but it was the work of a genius. Seriously, to be able to make a cover of an iconic song in such a way, to write clever lyrics, to adapt it to our current generation, to create interesting and contrasting melodic lines while still being able to hear where it comes from in such a skillful way is beyond comprehension.
Also, BTS slayed the whole song. They are so talented. They managed to control every single line they were given perfectly and they performed it so well. Each one of their voices is well balanced, their lines matches with their individual tones and they completely understood the meaning of the song. They gave their all and they put so much emotion into it.
This is how you do a cover. This is how you make someone else's song your own. This is how you make a cover innovative, interesting and captivating. They didn't just do a "copy/paste" process to make a tribute: they changed the whole song, they added their own colours and they interpreted it in their own personal way. They made this cover so that BTS could participate in Seo Taiji's tribute and it was extremely well done.
The song is fantastic and the cover is mindblowing. After analysing both the original song and the cover, i would say that i prefer the latter. But it doesn't change the fact the Seo Taiji's version is also innovative and interesting in its own way. They are so different yet it's the same song. I believe that this cover deserves way more appreciation and attention.
It is a masterpiece.
