About

This description is interactive. Hover over Yes.

What appears to be an old journal lies half buried in the sand before you.
Pick it up? >(Yes) (No)

You pick up and carefully dust off the old book, a handful of sketches falling at your feet as you do. You gather them, and begin to read.

Day 8: In my travels I have found many a beautiful and intriguing creature, but none have been so mysterious as what I've come to know from the locals of this sandy plain as the 'DuneRunner'. Seemingly named so for their incredible speed and ease while traversing the sands and what little remains of grasslands which stretch for miles between villages. My guide of these lands was more than willing to tell me all I wished to know about their kind.

He began to excitedly retell stories he had heard from his father when he was a boy, and thankfully, some personal accounts as well.

From what he had told me, they are a quadrupedal and nocturnal species; choosing to travel in the cool of the night, as opposed to the heat of the day and the desert sun. He spoke of majestic lights which trailed behind them as they would run, or around their tails and form as they rested. Their tails, which he added; opened and closed like the blooms of a lotus on moonlit nights, only adding to their vibrance. This heavily gave me the impression of them being a bioluminescent species. I wish to find one myself for the purpose of proper study and documentation.

Day 13: I have set out once more with a small caravan consisting of my guide and a handful of other locals in an attempt to find one of these creatures. I have created several images based upon what I have been told of what I believe their species may look like, these will of course be updated when we come across one of them.

Several pages have since faded to time or the sand, but it picks up shortly after.

Day 72: We've done it. While attempting to set up camp for the evening we neared an oasis over a large and difficult to climb dune, and we saw them. An entire.. shall I call them a herd? A fair sized group of them in a wide range of colors, a gorgeous glow like nothing I have seen. Blues, yellows, greens, pinks, and oranges, massive bloomed flowers reflecting off the waters surface as the creatures lay on the sands above. Though my original thoughts had been wrong, its a pleasant surprise. They're somewhat covered in markings and antennae showing the same glow as their tails. My guide will be assisting me in approaching.

~

The initial meeting was a success, they are quite gentle creatures though they are notably skittish. I am thankful my guide remembered seeing them as a boy as he was able to get closer without spooking them, it appears they enjoy cactus fruit, one of the larger males (whom our guide has named Raener) even attempting to steal his satchel to get at its chosen snack. Their behavior is similar to what I've read of the horses of the old world. Although they appear to be more affectionate and sentient; as well our guide seems to have made a connection with him. We shall be staying close to the herd to learn all that we can.

Day 92: The DuneRunners have yet to migrate once more beyond the area of the oasis, however I have moved the camp of the caravan further back should this have been a factor as to why they've yet to leave. I have taken the time to record my findings in the meantime. They lack any young in their herd, so my observations are based purely on the adults, using Raener as the base.

My guide approached me earlier with a sketch of his own to my surprise; it seems his bond with the creature has grown quite a bit more than a simple desire for snacks and attention. He gave me a rather loose design of what appears to be his reproductive organs; as well as a rather red faced description of how they function. I shall leave the sketch here, but I know I will need to see it myself for proper documentation.

Species: DuneRunner

Height: Around 6' ft or (183 cm) when on all fours, when standing on its hind legs it reaches a height of 9 ft (275 cm.)

Weight: From 800 lbs (363 kg) in the females to 1200 lbs (544 kg) in the males.

Top Speed: 80 mph (130 kmh)

Diet: Omnivorous: They will eat meat from any source but their own kind, preferring Fish. As well as various fruit and vegetables, a favorite being cactus fruit.

Intelligence: While they do not speak a language we can replicate, they clearly understand our speech and respond with their own behavior; which at times mimics our own. They have a complex set of emotions, and can even easily learn and adapt to situations which surprised me. Would I have to put it to an age, I would say their level of maturity grows much like our own. Raener seeming to match that of a being in their early to mid 20s.

Biological and emotional points of interest: They are able to open and close their tails in a similar manner to a lotus. Their tails, eyes, antennae, and the markings on their bodies are bioluminescent and as a result glow at night and in the dark. When cold, scared, sad, asleep, or running their tails rest in a fully closed position. When defending their territory or mate from potential predators, they will fully extend their tails and give a low and defensive hiss. When relaxed their tails remain in a fully open position as well.

Life Span: Currently unknown. Likely matching our own, from 80-90 years if healthy.

Mating behavior: Currently unknown, I must ask our guide to clarify.

Day 100: The herd has begun to move once more, however Raener refuses to leave my guide's side. Perhaps they mate for life? As a result of this, I shall be bringing them both back with me to the continent when I return.

The entries end there.
