Sternennacht looks stunning!
Sternennacht's very special treasure!
Barghest are large, canine spirits that live in or near towns. It has always been said that the barghest is an omen of misfortune, because they appear in times of tragedy, when that is far from the truth. Barghests adopt towns, families or individuals as their charge, watching over and protecting them in time of great need. They can sense danger long before it occurs and vigilantly seek to protect their charges from that danger. Every barghest has curled ears and a long tail, with a ghostly trail of shadow rising off of them like smoke.
When the great feathered serpent lands on the mainland of Furvilla during the Serpent's Gala, winged barghest leave their Quetzal Palace homeland in search of charges to care for. These barghest pride themselves on their bravery and ferocity in combat, and stubbornly refuse to back down from a threat against their charge. They have tender souls, however, and adore watching the sunset hues dance across the misty clouds.
Sternennacht was one of the many feathered barghest that floated from the back of the great feathered serpent during the first Serpent's Gala festival in Furvilla. He made his way towards the humble town of Olde Foxbury in search of a charge to watch over. You see, without a charge, bargest feel very weak and vulnerable, because taking care of someone they love is like an armor that makes them stronger. Maybe soon he will find a charge to care for...

The Barghest Charge by myself
Sternennacht gripped his wooden sword tight in his teeth and raced towards the heaving log beast that shambled out of the brambles. With a flash of wings and branches, he was knocked spinning to the ground. 'Taff,' he though to himself as the log beast groaned and ambled back into the woods. 'I'm a mighty barghest and I can't even defend this town from wandering monsters. How do I expect myself to defend a charge?' He shook his wings and brushed off the broken feathers before finding a shade tree to rest in. Licking his wounds he felt ashamed to be a barghest.
After a short rest, he was awoken from his dozing by the clatter of metal and a tiny but fierce cry. Groggily, Sternennacht stumbled to his paws and went dashing towards the sound, half running, half gliding. To his surprise, a humble sheep was standing over a mighty arborial apologizing to it as it lay dazed and confused. “I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to break your branches! Please forgive me! You need to go back into the woods now. The town is no place for you. Please go back into the woods.” The ewe was nudging the arborial towards the trees and sheepishly brushing the dirt clods and grass from it's bark.
Stern tilted his head from side to side as he watched the sheep. “What are you doing?” he shouted.
The ewe turned quickly, brandishing her feathered spear, but when she saw the barghest holding Foxbury weapons, she paused and lowered her guard. “I'm, uhm, getting this arborial away from the town. W-who are you? What are you?”
The arborial rubbed his branches and wandered off. “Aren't you going to slay that beast?” the barghest snapped.
“Oh, no, no, no!” the ewe stammered. “I couldn't kill him. He's just cranky because the citizens of Foxbury were throwing metal pieces into his grove. There's no need to hurt him.”
The barghest stumbled in disbelief because he was so taken aback by the little sheep. “To answer your questions, I'm Sternennacht, a barghest from Quetzal Palace. However, I'm not sure what you are-” he shook his head, “I mean to say, I know you are a sheep, but I can't believe you're so brave.”
The sheep chortled sweetly, “Oh! I've heard of barghest before! It's easy to be brave when you understand that these creatures don't mean as much harm as you think. And you,” she laughed, “were you coming to rescue me? You don't seem well prepared.” She gestured to the wooden sword at the barghest's side.
Stern lowered his head and laid his curled ears back as best he could. “I'm also not very good at using it, either.” He perked up a bit, “What's your name?”
“You may call me Fleece,” she chimed cheerfully before turning around to show a blue moon butterfly hanging tightly to her wooly back, “and this is Whisper! He's my assistant!” The little butterfly tremored with glee at the introduction. He seemed to just be along for moral support, as a butterfly would be relatively unhelpful in battle. The barghest let a low chuckle roll from his chest, the first time he'd laughed since he left his cloudy home in search of a charge. “Would you like me to show you how to handle yourself in battle?” the sheep offered. “I don't think I'm the greatest of warriors, but I know a few tricks,” she bashfully added as she rubbed her wooly head puff.
Stern's neck fur ruffled and his cheeks felt warm, “I'd love it if you helped me!”
After a few short hours, Stern began to understand how best to position his paws and how strong heavy blows were often less important than quick and precise sweeps. He was absolutely in awe of how the precious sheep used her grace and confidence to land her strikes instead of brute force. “I think the most important thing to remember,” she said, “is to not be afraid to ask for help. I'll always assist you when you need pointers, or just a little motivation.”
The barghest looked down at his large paws. “Can I tell you something about myself?”
“Did you know that I don't have a charge?” he bashfully looked to one side.
The sheep smiled and said in naivety, “It's okay, you'll find one soon, I'm sure if it!”
Stern leaned towards Fleece, sheepishly, “I was actually wondering, if I could be your charge.”
Not quite understanding what was being asked of her, Fleece asked “What would being a charge carer entail?”
“Well, you seem to have so much confidence despite your timid disposition, and I could learn a lot from you if we became friends.”
Fleeces eyes became larger and glistened as they grew damp, “I'd love to have you as a friend!” She threw her hooves around his fluffy neck and snuggled his fur. Stern wrapped his wings around her in a warm embrace.
