Yeah, the thing about 5e is that the information is widespread, and is easy to teach. Orcpub has a list of spells and stuff, and really helps you build your character intuitively- so it's easy!
But I think I'd rather have everyone have access to at least the PHB....
Yeeees! I have more experience with 3.5e, but I'm learning 5e and it's pretty easy. :o If I did, I'd be starting out probably with Lost Mines of Phandelver, as that's a good starting adventure.
