My main sources of income have been herbalist and explorer, truthfully. Construction is necessary with explorer to get more slots after you've gotten the 5k villager slot because you'll need houses (which are quite expensive).
Doctor's were a main method of income initially, but the market is so saturated with medicine, it's hard to make any profit now. :(
It gets easier as time goes by! Let me know if you need anything. :)
