Though Akira is male, he is often mistaken as a woman due to his delicate features.
He was born as the third son to a pair of rice farmers in southern Japan, and though sons are generally useful on the farm, his parents struggled to feed the three boys. Eventually, at age 5, his parents sold him to the local daimyo. Since he was so young, Akira was put to work in the kitchens. He was treated kindly by all of the workers in the house and considered them his family.
As he grew older, Akira became rather striking. His jawline soft, lips full, eyes sharp. Anyone who saw him was surprised to find he was not a she. The lady of the house began to take a particular interest in him, and his master did not like it in the least. Akira was quietly removed from the house and sold to the manager of a local Kabuki theater.
He missed his home terribly, but soon found that theater life wasn't too bad. At least, not at first. Akira was trained to be the troupe's onnagata and would be expected to perform all of the female roles. The theater billed him as "Momo" and he quickly became a favorite of the patrons.
His best and only friend is a magician named Neha whom he met by chance after getting lost on his way back to the theater one day. She is his guardian and protector.
