After the sudden death of this world's first god, The Eidolon, a new being rose to take his place. A regular jailer with no godly power at all, this new entity claimed to be Eidolon reborn as Eidolon did promise in his prophecies that he would be "remade and reborn". A parasitic demon, this creature, this False Eidolon, would use the religious figures of a cult that formed around its lies as hosts. To prove his "godly power", something he didn't have, The False Eidolon and the cult's former leader Hiscilla set out to make two new serpent gods- the third and the fourth. Of course, Erysichthon is the fourth serpent god, predicted by Eidolon to be created sometime after the creation of the first two. Erys was prophesized by the original Eidolon as being an aquatic, glacial serpent with a hunger so endless it would devour the first two serpents; for this fourth serpent is the god of gluttony and arctic waters. While his hunger is definitely insatiable, Erys is not at all a mindless beast controlled by hunger, unlike how he was described originally. A sweetheart, he doesn't have the means to eat anyone purposefully, and as such the first two serpents were safe- for now.
As Xanthos was held deep underground for fifteen years after his creation, the people of this world really and truly believed that the False Eidolon was Eidolon reborn and his two children, Erys and his twin sister Eupolemeia, were actually the first and second serpent described in the prophecies. The False Eidolon came in at the right time in history to take advantage of the people's fears and woes over losing their god. This cult that formed around this misbelief worships Erys deeply, constantly throwing religious sacrifices of food to him in a futile effort to keep him satiated. Erys knows better. He knows the False Eidolon is, well, false- and that he's not in anyway the son of the real Eidolon. Unfortunately though, his hunger blinded him from truth, and was too busy stuffing his face with free food to speak up.
This would eventually backfire on Erys, deservedly. The cult of the False Eidolon is, well, a cult- and as such outsiders were curious, and this lead to someone infiltrating the cult. They did not believe in these lies, and that accidentally slipped. It only took a moments time for the crowd of cultists to get worked up over the arrival of the nonbeliever, and in a feedback loop of anger and rile they ended up doing something evil. They tossed the heretic to Erys, and he acted on instinct. He had only ever eaten anything they tossed him before, he never had to think about it- and he didn't this time, either.
Truly massive, Erys is twenty-five feet in height and often grows after eating; he's fortunately an incredibly gentle giant though, and wouldn't ever harm a fly, literally- he loves bugs. His sweet, loving, and empathetic nature is why he deeply regrets what happened to that "heretic". He feels incredibly sorry and lives with trauma from the incident to this day, he has a phobia of things being eaten alive now. His stomach acid is a large vat of sulfuric acid, and with a hummingbird-like metabolism; spitting that person back up only seconds after was still too late- the flashbacks of human chymus are quite intense and sickening for him. This is why he avoids Xanthos and Valero, the real first two serpents. It was prophesied he would eat them, and since he has no desire to eat anyone he thought this was false as he couldn't fathom a scenario in which he'd accidentally eat someone...until it happened. He avoids them to keep them safe, as he no longer trusts himself in that regard.
While he does have some hobbies like calligraphy, tying and untying knots, and lockpicking, Erys is incredibly lazy and doesn't really partake in them often, he spends most of his time sleeping away. The other half of his time usually goes to socializing, as he's painfully extroverted and loves to make friends and chat with people. His gluttony doesn't just apply to food and eating, but he also has this innate inability to feel satisfied socially. No matter what anyone says to him or how many friends he has, it never feels like enough, he's still hungry. Equally, while he is super sweet and mellow as all hell, he can be a bit of a diva and sometimes DEMANDS of things rather than asking- and he does have a little bit of a god complex (while also hating himself, somehow).
