FL0R4 (pronounced Flora), is an enthusiastic herbalist from Olde Foxbury. She has since moved with the village to Dragonsmaw Manor, and perhaps will move with them once again, enjoying the company of the many animals that both depend on it and that it is dependent on. FL0R4 is close friends with many of the explorers, loving to pester them the moment they return for seeds so she they may grow more and more plants from each and every kingdom.

I would say that you should utilize skills! For example some shields will either have Block or Parry, so you can negate damage or redirect it to essentially negate a turn. Don't forget that you can use Amulets as well, which can help you in battle depending on which one you use.
