Mars is a creature known as a Paranoia Figment, shape shifters that transform into your worst fear. Mars doesn't care much for scaring people, they just like surrounding themselves around fuzzy animals. Mars tries very hard to look for animals for Yuki in order to achieve this.
They don't often come back with them, but when he does he tends to find the rare ones attracted to Mars' surprisingly gentle demenor. The only times Mars shifts is to scare away predators from his tiny, fuzzy pals.
