The heat was tolerable, it was midday and peace seemed to have been achieved for at least a short amount of time. The two territories that were always at war with each other seemed to be taking a break to prepare for their next attacks and care for their wounded. It wasn’t rare they had short cease-fire periods such as this. In fact, Casimiro had just finished taking care of a few patients who had been in dire need of replacement limbs and emergency surgery. Being a doctor was tough, and sometimes unbearable, but the looks of relief and peace on their faces brought light to his heart and day. He was extremely happy not to have seen one of his least favorite patients in the infirmary today, meaning he was unharmed. Arkkael. Cas thought about the Jerk for a while as he sat under a tree to shade himself from the intense heat of the sun.
Arkkael was pretty much the only Jerk he hated more than anything to see in the emergency treatment area. Cas had become so fond of him that he had even developed a small crush on him. The Doc blushed slightly just thinking about it. He leaned back against the tree with a small smile on his face and closed his eyes. He enjoyed being around the Jerk. He was sarcastic and witty most of the time, but seemed to control himself a lot more when around him. He found it sweet. The advance that machines have in the times they were in now was amazing. Just the fact that Arkkael could think and feel mostly like a human blew Cas’s mind. He couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to love—
“Hey Cas!”
The voice jerked Cas out of his slight day dream as he jumped a little in surprise. Looking up, he saw Arkkael waving his arm and coming closer. The Doc smiled and patted the grass next to him for the Jerk to sit down. Still blushing somewhat, Cas glanced at Arkkael.
“What brings you here today, Ark?”
As he sat down next to Cas, he grinned.
“Oh, nothing much. I just got briefed about the next attack. We were dismissed and told to do what we wanted for the rest of the day.” He threw a wink at the Doctor. “So, I was wandering around until I saw you, and thought: Well, why not spend it with someone I don’t find infuriating.”
Cas laughed. “That’s an interesting way to put it! I’m glad I don’t infuriate you, my friend.”
Conversation from there on was light hearted. They talked for hours, reminiscing about the past battles, how close they had been and how things seemed to be looking better. The two of them weren’t always close but ever since Cas helped rebuild Arkkael from a seriously violent battle, they have been inseparable friends. It wasn’t strange in their time, to be friends with machines who harbored thoughts and emotions much like humans.
Suddenly, as the night was sunset was drawing nearer, the Jerk looked over at Cas with a curious look on his face.
“Cas, have you ever thought what was the point of all the fighting?”
Cas was surprised. He didn’t think Arkkael was capable of such deep thoughts. He sighed and closed his eyes.
“All the time Ark, and it still confuses me as to why we are always so violent with each other. I became a doctor for a reason.”
Arkkael hummed in thought. “I’m glad I met you.”
Cas smiled, blushing. “Me too Ark, me too.”
They sat in silence for a while more before deciding it was time to head off to prepare for the next day. Surely, there would be another battle. Saying their goodbyes, both were left with something to ponder this night.
