True story time: When I was 19 I was diagnosed with a form of cancer that was curable through massive surgery, and that on top of my mental illness was enough to finally decide to adopt a therapy animal to help cope with all the negative changes.
At the 12th shelter I went too I immediately saw a small, frail calico sitting away from the other kittens. The second I picked her up she started purring and the caretakers said that had never happened before. I knew right then and there that this was meant to be my cat.
Unfortunately at the time she was in horrific condition. She had been left in an alley where her mother had died and starvation, disease, and human-inflicted wounds completely covered her. They let me adopt her after letting me know she would most likely not survive.
3 months later she was a healthy kitten and started to trust people again. I can honestly say this cat is a fighter and one of the most loving, happy, and honestly crazy beings I have ever met.
She is the world to me.
